For all of you Germans and expats living in Germany, if you haven't been to Bad Wimpfen's Christmas Market - what are you waiting for. It is our favourite!
Bad Wimpfen is an historic spa town and is located about 55 km east of Heidelberg and about 195 km (1.5 hr drive) west and little south of Erlangen.
I had read (somewhere on the world wide web) that it has one of the most traditional Christmas Markets in Germany, where all of the booths sell hand made items from Germany. We just had to go.
Their market is called Altdeutscher Weihnachtsmarkt - which translates to Old German Christmas Market.
Since this market is so popular, I booked our accommodation months ago. We stayed at Schloss Heinsheim - an old castle located in the small village of Heinsheim, about 5 km north of Bad Wimpfen.
It was a wonderful stay. Once we checked in, we went to our room only to find that it smelt of smoke, even though it was a non-smoking hotel. Then they showed us another room (room - if you can call it that). We said...it will do... It was 1500 sq ft!!!!
All for €85,00 ($110.00 Cdn).
After we settled into our castle, we walked, along the River Neckar to Bad Wimpfen.
Most of the markets we have been to are located in the main square of the town. But this market is located on the pedestrian streets all around the old town.
What is a Christmas Market without a Feuerzangenbowle....
Some of the items for sale....
We had heard there was going to be a snow storm, as you can see it is getting snowier and snowier.....
Our walk home in the snow.....
The next day the snow had stopped, but it was a winter wonderland...
We took our time, checked out and drove home in the sun. What a great trip!!
